5/29/2023 0 Comments Evil west wikiSo initially, I was down on Evil West the theme and setting and prominent crashed zeppelin early in the plot brought back a few vestigial memories of The Order: 1886, that I'd long thought solvent abuse has successfully quashed. ![]() Or maybe it's the fact that there's precisely one female character in the entire plot, whose every other line of dialogue is complaining about how the boys don't take her seriously enough, or just that the main character is a stock squinty, grumbly badass whose usual contribution to exposition scenes is to grunt, "English, doc!" whenever one of his pet tech nerds starts using language roughly as advanced as that of an instruction pamphlet for an electric beard trimmer. A lot of that could be the story, and the way it clunkily switches from gameplay to prerendered cutscene where the camera zooms in too close on characters as they massively overanimate, so it looks like Paul Greengrass shooting a documentary on submarine crews with Parkinson's disease. Happily, this is a war that can be fought by trudging through linear environments, getting into conveniently fenced-off battles with strictly regimented numbers of enemy units so yeah, it's another ghost train ride game where herds of wild contextual button prompts sweep majestically across the plains, and then politely queue up to squeeze down narrow passages of every imaginable variety.īut as implied earlier, setting aside, there's something terribly old-fashioned about Evil West that feels a bit PlayStation 3-era. And besides, he's got all their weapons strapped to his back, which would make it very difficult to sit in an office chair.įortunately, the agency is driven onto the back foot by a coordinated vampire assault, and Jesse finds himself on the frontlines of an all-out supernatural war, leading a now severely undermanned agency against the schemes of an insane vampire leader and the plans they have brewing behind their insidious magical glamor, or glamour that was the other thing the voice actors forgot to compare notes on. Said hero is Jesse Rentier, or Jesse Renti-ay - the voice actors never really reached a consensus on that one - vampire hunter in the Hugh Jackman Van Helsing mold, but without the excuse of cold European weather to justify wearing the entire stock of a camping supply shop at once, who refuses to take a desk job at HQ because he's a vampire hunter cop on the edge, and they need him out on the streets, etc. If you're confused, just remember: "weird" is rubbing your scrotum up and down the inside of a tureen "evil" is serving gravy out of it to your in-laws afterwards.Įvil West is a third-person action-adventure about a government agency in Wild West times, who must fight a secret war across the entire American continent against an organized race of vampires, despite only employing, like, two competent dudes who mostly hang out together, arguing over who has the most grizzled cowboy penis, and despite the agency's entire supply of weapons and gadgets being constantly worn by one of those dudes, so he waddles about the battlefield, rattling like a dodgy shopping cart full of Lego. The two games have absolutely no relation. Evil West is not to be confused with Weird West this isn't one developer exclusively making cowboy games and doing the Sonic thing where they just take the recurring franchise word and bolt a second word on the end. ![]() Spock has a beard, but I'm currently appreciating video games as a way to experience previous, more hopeful eras from history we can play World War II shooters to remember a time of noble camaraderie and Blitz spirit, Assassin's Creed IV to live out a boyish dream of the Golden Age of Piracy, and, of course, we have today's subject, Evil West, which immerses us in the wild and lawless days of 2010, when the Xbox 360 rode tall in the saddle, and people really didn't expect much from their third-person shooters. Maybe it's because we're living in the evil timeline where George Bailey never existed and Mr. ![]() ![]() This week in Zero Punctuation, Yahtzee reviews Evil West.

5/29/2023 0 Comments Junkit bowie texasMaybe that was just part of the full-on headache experience now underway. I went to comb my hair and once I got my arm high enough, a new discovery… The only good news was my upper lip didn’t hurt at all. I thought about that TV episode as I ended my shower. Of course, once on the slopes they proceed to run into each other…two skiers…and a goat.Īfter seeking medical treatment, Rob reports to Jerry he was given the diagnosis of a “sprained body.” The only thing on Rob’s body that didn’t hurt was the left side of his upper lip. In 1963, there was an episode of The Dick Van Dyke television show called, “Don’t Trip Over That Mountain.” In it, Rob Petrie (Dick) promises his wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) he won’t get hurt during a ski trip with his neighbor Jerry (Jerry Paris), who happens to be an expert skier. It was during the shower I first noticed something was…off. We were being taken out by Osmonics to a very fancy steakhouse, but there was still a couple of hours before I needed to be in the lobby for the ride out. Having my own room, I figured I’d just clean up and hang out there before heading to dinner. I had accomplished the main goal of getting exercise…while also feeling just a little bit younger by hanging in there and playing a solid, “regular-length” game of basketball.īack at the hotel, I needed to take a well-deserved shower. That was fine by me – one run was enough for the day. I played well, even though we didn’t pull off a win to guarantee a spot for the next game. ![]() The game in progress ended a few minutes later, and we hit the court for the next one, pairing up with a few players from the team that just lost. I was looking forward to showing off the fact I still “had game” to my buddies, but was definitely picturing that happening in the smaller footprint. My conditioning wasn’t bad as I regularly played half-court hoops. Sure, I was in good shape for someone soon to turn 35. I did feel a twinge of concern as to how I would do playing in a full-court basketball game. There was a full-court pick-up game in process, so we sat nearby until it ended so we could get into the next one. Three members of my group went off to the weight room, but myself and a couple of the other guys went over to the basketball courts. It was gigantic, looked brand-new, and offered plenty of workout options. ![]() Since we knew we only had a half day of training one day during the seminar schedule, we all agreed to head over to the gym and get in a workout then.Īfter product training all Monday and Tuesday morning, Tuesday afternoon found us at the gym. After arriving at our hotel, we learned that as guests we had complimentary passes to utilize the fitness gym across the street. Beautiful countryside and residences, and that time of year provided a chill in the air and a touch of snow on the ground, making a “winter person” like myself quite happy. I had never been to Minnesota before, and I was very impressed with what I saw traveling from the airport to our hotel. The company I was working for at that time was a distributor of their products, and six of us went out there to get training in their product line so we’d have a better understanding of how to market and sell their products. In March of 1992, I was in Minnetonka MN as part of a business training seminar put on by a high-technology water purification and filtration company named Osmonics. ![]() My response took little time to formulate. The question of the day in the lunch room for the three “more experienced” of us was…when did we first feel definitively older than we hoped we were? A couple of co-workers were about a decade younger than I. During a workplace lunch just a couple of years ago, we were all talking about the aging process. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Graffiti bridge![]() Sorry, but this viewer just couldn't fit into them. The nightclub scene in Minneapolis since the events in Purple Rain has centered on an area called Seven Corners, which houses four venues: the Clinton House, owned by George (George Clinton) an eponymous club belonging to Melody Cool (Mavis Staples) who is raising a son, Tevin (Tevin Campbell) the Glam Slam, which the Kid (Prince) oversees, and Pandemonium, run by Morris (Morris Day). This guy needs to get out of the house more! The film is a trite miscellany of ``one-inch thoughts'' (to borrow a phrase from David Bowie). ``Graffiti Bridge'' 's biggest flaw, however, is that it's about such a tiny, tiny world. Even cameo appearances by gospel singer Mavis Staples and funk-surrealist George Clinton fail to add any energy. Sure there's singing, but it's so obviously lip-synched that it comes across as feverishly inert. Sure there's dancing, but Janet Jackson does it better. It's a neo-Expressionist tempest in a teapot. Technically, the film is a compendium of stale MTV gimmicks - dry ice, stylized sets. The only woman who isn't dolled up in go-go gear gets hit by a truck. He also seems to have joined Michael Jackson in a Diana Ross lookalike contest - which he's winning because he's got the right hairdo (never mind the three days' growth of beard).Īndrogyny is all very well - but what does it mean when it's accompanied by homophobia and misogyny? Prince wouldn't dream of slithering around anything that wasn't female, and when Morris Day and sidekick Jerome Benton accidentally kiss, they gag and have spasms. While Prince-the-cinema-auteur is obsessed with fitting strapping Amazonian lasses into black leather bikinis, Prince-the-screen-persona is equally adamant about bringing back coy, off-the-shoulder, form-fitting Valley Girl fashions in the '90s - for boys, that is. For those trying to pass the time while watching the movie, it's fun to theorize about this actor-director's deep sexual confusion. The film's subtext is far more interesting. Day recycles his two jokes from ``Purple Rain'' - combing his hair and looking in the mirror - while ogling every chick in sight. He's smitten with the idea of himself as a holier-than-thou rock icon. Prince's onstage performances are less fun than they've ever been. Because Prince wrote all the songs anyway, it's hard to see what all the fuss is about. Ostensibly, ``Graffiti Bridge'' is about a battle between the ``spiritual'' music of The Kid (Prince) and the money-grubbing music of Morris Day. She also gets to say, ``It's just around the corner'' again and again. How could I ever know the real meaning of heaven?'' She's a bit of a beatnik who writes poems and sits on a bridge, when she isn't materializing and dematerializing without rhyme or reason in various nightclubs.Īura whispers her poetry in voice-over: ``Abandoned on the street at the tender age of seven ![]() The Kid hangs on.Įncouraging him is Aura (newcomer Ingrid Chavez). ![]() Without a club, where could he play his music?
